Improving Pumped Hydro Storage Flexibility in China: Scenarios for Advanced Solutions Adoption and Policy Recommendations

The decarbonisation targets of the People’s Republic China are ambitious. Their achievement relies on large-scale deployment variable renewable energy sources (VRES), such as wind and solar. High penetration VRES may lead to balancing problems grid, which can be compensated by increasing shifting flexibility capacity system integration with storage, e.g., installing additional electricity storage.
